I love input on both policy and the threads which generate interest. Quality remarks which explore striper fishing anecdotally meet the criteria for the reason our members come here. We have had some real smoker threads lately which have drawn large numbers of views -- Woolner/Beardsly, Eastern Tides/Twenty Years, Fifty Pounder counts to name only some.

Some do crash and burn and we can see the system self-righting when it happens. I find it particularly distressing to spend hours crafting responses then find only 20 viewings in three days. I also wish someone would explain to me why we can smoke a couple of days and appeal to no one for the better part of a week.

Sorry Frank! May and June are my "very busy" months. I will put more time in here when things get a little slower...........JC

We just had two members ask about the Outer Cape. I knew they would not be happy with what had to be told. I knew being the messenger was not going to be popular. Gone!

Frank, perhaps you have to develop some tackle-shop "speak" to attract more members

One time, friend and I put in hours early AM along a jetty, saw one or 2 snappers harrasing shiners along the rocks. These were like 1 lb snappers, none of which we caught. Went back to a well known shop and told the guy. Later that morning the report was up "couple of guys came in and reported ... blues all over"

When we go dead as we have this week, I always wonder why. I still don't know but I wonder if the threads are too far from the striper surf. I mean, Global Warming, people selling their unrelated wares, management issues, hunting/shooting, none of these relate to asking about striper fishing. The site relies upon input from its members but the threads don't seem to inspire that. I'm certain that some of the fault is mine, as is the case with hunting/shooting, but if our hits go down, advertising will follow, the the basis for our existance will vanish. At wit's end as to what we can do, if anybody has any ideas, I would like to see them aired here.

The power of a thread lies in the idea. When one of us starts a thread on something that truly serves our readers the quality and number of responses catches fire. Just look at Gorilla or Fly Fishing World Record for an example of a smoker subject. Conversely, when someone digresses in a thread putting something up that has nothing to do with it, or confuses readers, the thing falls flat. I always ask myself, "what is this guy doing?" He starts a good thread, there are a few enthusiastic responses, and the same guy puts something that is a digression that nobody can follow. BADABING!

As a volunteer who comes here for your benefit, I am distressed by the notion that so many of you do not take my contributions seriously enough to follow the protocols. I am aware that many of you, especially those above on the new thread that was violated, do not even indicate that you've gone back and read the protocols. Sure, I understand that many of you are all over the Internet posting here and there and don't see the difference between Fiction and Ask Frank. But I view your mixing of them with me a trivialization of the highest order. If you have no regard for me and the protocols which were written by the person who pays the bills around here, and that is not me, then please do not degrade our efforts with your presence. We have plenty of people who remove their hats at dinner; we have plenty of people who read the directions; we have plenty of people who admit it when they are wrong. If you do not want to play by the rules of this site, then play somewhere that will never notice either your presence or your absense.

Speaking only for myself....I do take your contributions, knowledge and experience quite seriously.

I believe that your message is targeted at me but possibly others as well.

Most acquaintances regard me as a soft-spoken gentleman....someone who attempts to be a part of the solution and not the problem. I did not know of the protocols and therefore was in violation. No insult or upset was intended.

To be very clear....I am also a member of a flytying forum but it is only a resource for patterns and I never post there. This is the only fishing forum where I post messages.

I apologize for hurting your feelings. It was ignorance of the protocols, it was not intentional. For me, this is striper fishing not fiction.

I don't post often..but when I do I love it... I have more questions then I dare ask.. and I seem to get a fish each day.....and I owe most /all of my fishing success to Frank, his books and you all... The site is Ask Frank and we come here for that. All else is an added bonus. Here what he decides and his wishes should be - law and we should try our best to adhere.

By way of reminder, there is a sticky thread on protocols: http://stripersurf.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16549

Thanks!

(that said, I've been guilty of violations from time to time!!)

You violated the cardinal rule here at Ask Frank. Just be glad that you were not dining with our trusty mentor. Reaching for the loaf of bread even though you did not remove your hat . The sting on your hand from the switch lasts for days.

I can speak only to my needs and what I find I always want to do.. relive the days events to figure what went wrong, share the excitement , figure what I might do beter or differently, what would guys with greater experience do but always I find I want to ask.. How to and what equipment I should use. As the level of my expertise grow and my time diminishes I figure good equipment would help me cast better , fish more with less frustrations. I am always timid about asking. Even now I feel like my suggestion is not weighty enough. But HEY what should I buy." Too simplistic ? but I think many guys out there are overwhelmed by choices offered and hype. So,,, equipment reviews discussions /advice. and My apologizes for any past digressions from format. I must have done it from time to time..

Regarding digressions, I dislike and even suspect posts which stray from the original red hot thread's subject. We get something good and a guy puts up a picture of his buddy, when he knows it gets my ash. I would prefer that a member put up a new thread than pour cold water on an existing one.

As for the protocol violation we recently experienced, keep in mind that it is Bob D'Amico who made that call, not Mister Smarty. I support the idea of having the protocol. What kills me is that so often people show they love to come here but don't read the protocol. Lastly, we are not touchy about rules. We not the Sisters of the Holy Cross, just the Frank first rule.
