Default Penn 650SS question:

I got a couple of old ones and took them apart for cleaning etc. I couldn't get the main gear apart from the sideplate on either of them to clean out the side bearing.
Is there some secret procedure for doing this? I have a couple of Penn 6500SS reels and they come apart easily.

I don't think it's corrosion that's keeping it in there. There's a in and out little play on both of them and no rust. The bearings spin freely and actually spin better than most others I've taken off old reels I've had.

Maybe I don't need to worry about them.

PB blaster around the stub of the main gear and let sit over night. LIGHTLY tap it out the next morning. Once its out clean the stub on the gear with scotch bright pad LIGHTLY and the inner ring of the bearing. They shouldn't be tight like that. You might want to get new bearings, if they are spinning faster and abit looser then the seals could be shot.

Everyone should tear down their penn reels at the end of every season. A complete and total tear down should take no more than 10 minutes from beginning to end. Clean and degrease everything that moves and relube and regrease and reassemble. Penn is the single easiest reel to maintain and they will last a lifetime. They were designed to maintained and thats why they last. Parts are cheap and available and Penn will also do this for you for a charge as well. Honestly after hearing some horror stories about VS's getting tight or locking up I'm glad that I have my 20 year old penns that work everytime no matter what.

Probably the old grease causing this. It should just pop out- tap it if needed.
