eek Snakehead Caught - Strawbridge Lake NJ

I know this is saltwater forum, but thought I'd share. While fishing for largemouth I caught a snakehead in Strawbride Lake NJ (Moorestown). 13" specimen. First I've seen or heard of them in the area. Reported to the NJ Fish & Wildlife Bureau.

From the pics the head looks snakehead but the coloring and marks look bowfin, Ive heard snakeheads are much darker but I've never seen a snakehead in person other then my fish tank when I was a kid. The easiest way to identify is the anal fin which is under the fish in the pics.

snakehead - anal fin 1/2 to 2/3rds the length of the dorsal fin

bowfin - anal fin very short

not doubting just don't want anyone catching a bowfin to freak out and kill it thinking snakehead

I've caught a few bowfins, and that color scheme doesn't look like a bowfin. Bowfins tend to be all brown. The fish might be a snakehead.

Looks like a snakehead, you see enough of an anal fin underneath the fish. And the color pattern looks like one.

It's a snakehead and tons are being caught in the Delaware River tidal backwaters in my area in South Jersey.

i work right by there.. i've fished there several times as well. Looking at the map, it does look like the lake is connected to a creek that connects to the delaware river...
Which section of the Lake did you catch it on? the main? or the slower backwaters towards the east?

snakeheads are on the run!

Yeah i catch them occasionally too. Went to several places yesterday and was able to see numerous spawning activities. There were one couple that were pretty big with a LARGE amount of babies swimming around. pretty neat.
