The B has been taken out of the BLT. I say that if you feel bad about killing something than don't eat meat or fish. Our culture never addresses the contradictions that are in place. If the culture has changed than so haven't the readers. Outdoor readers have evolved, albeit at a slower pace, due to influence exerted when the press will not cover blood sports. With 60 million fishermen and 15 million hunters in the country, outdoor columns have a place -- certainly better place than the "fake news" you are seeing every day. What would you prefer to read about, sexual abuse that happened in the days of Columbus or fishing? :dunno:

If an "outdoors" column needs an article every week about some rare bird sighted at the beach, so now everybody needs to go out and buy the new $12,000 Nikor lens, I can't see how that detracts from the repetitive and fake fishing reports in some publications that everybody limited out with big fish. Id read it all either way, and skip the politics or depressing news.
Sarcasm aside, I do think at least some of the columns can survive, and maybe even thrive, if they'd mix in some general discussion of nature along with hook n bullet. even some of the party boats are mixing in whale and seal watching

it took time but now my wife and kids know how/where to get fresh seafood, and now they agree its so good. so anything is possible

(still working on getting them to eat duck or goose)

Nearly defunct today, we used to have hook and bullet columns devoted to fishing and hunting. Big charity shoots to raise money for Make-a-Wish. Joe Blow caught a near record Wrasse in the Poekepse River. Mary Brown broke a 100 straight at the Happy Valley weekend trap tourney; Deer hunters have reported seeing a 12 point buck that apparently survived this year's deer season. That is better than the "fake news" in the rest of the paper today. I think the Vinyard still has an outdoor column and Al Ristori has a column in New Jersey. There are some.

Also, there is an evolution in fishing and hunting which reflects changes/developments in the various activities. Everybody hunts with scopes today and iron sights are history. Crossbows, hertofor unknown ten years ago are in widespread use in deer hunting. SW fishing is boat fishing and very little attention is given to shore fishing which was once common. Fly fishing is so specialized that they have their own closed society and their own publications. Unbreakable lines make breaking off so remote as to be given little attention.
