ife is too
short, the bass season is only 11 months a year 1
and there is so much to learn that no one man can know everything. One
Fall day I was surfcasting in one of my favorite spots and watching a couple
of fly fishermen just up the beach going through their ritual casting motions,
back and forth, back and forth and then swoosh, out the line shot and gently
fell onto the water. They stood in the wash, with their cute little baskets
around their waist,
stripping the line when BAM, their rods bent over and
each of them had a bass ripping through the water heading for Portugal.
A few minutes later each of them deftly beached a beautiful +36" striper
which they quickly released into the suds.
I was chagrined
because a few minutes earlier I had thoroughly plugged that spot with a
sure fire, never fail, lure. It was then I decided that there must be something
to this fly fishing "stuff" and decided to learn more about it, without
making a fool of myself. To that end, I am pleased to introduce Ed Zaun,
a man I think, who is almost as crazy as me, has the same irreverent writing
style and agrees that nothing in life is more important than fishing.
Example:
"I have a tendency to immerse myself
in my hobbies. Well, a psychiatrist might call it a pathological
trend toward obsession, but it doesn’t make me a bad person does it?"
I think, we think, the same way, I think.
1Yes, 11 months is what I told my wife years ago and
there is no reason to admit otherwise.
A
few words from Ed,
Welcome to "Fly Fishing the Salt" at StriperSurf.com. This section should be a lot of fun and an excellent means of sharing information
about this aspect of our sport.
I’d like to thank Bob for inviting me to sit in as Editor for this section. He has created an outstanding resource here and I’m excited to be part of it. It is very gracious of him to share his soapbox and says a lot about his dedication to the sport.
As you may have guessed, this section is be dedicated to flyfishing. There are articles and fly patterns, methods and essays.
Flyfishing in the saltwater is experiencing a tremendous boom in popularity. That means new methods, flies, and techniques are being developed every season, so we’ll have a lot to discuss and learn. Okay, let’s get the show on the road…
