The Sar-Mul-Mac was invented by Dan Blanton. It is a pretty busy fly,and has an enticing action in the water. The name stands for Sardine-Mullet-Mackerel. By adjusting the colors and using the same basic pattern, you can imitate all three forage fish. If you want to go deeper or add a darting motion to the fly, use the dumb bell eyes.
Stuff you'll need...
- Hook: Mustad 34007 or equivalent Size 1/0 - 3/0
- Tail: White Bucktail
- Wing: White Saddle Hackle, Sliver Flash-a-Boo, Blue Angel Hair, Green Crystal Flash
- Topping: Peacock Hurl
- Throat: White Bucktail
- Head: Red Chenille, White Chenille
- Eyes: Prismatic Stick-on or Dumb Bell eyes, depending on the action you want.
Tie it up...
- Place the hook in the vise and attach the tying thread.
- Tie in a medium clump of unstacked White Bucktail just forward of the bend. Make sure the hairs surround the shank.
- Tie in 3 White Saddle Hackles, vertically, on either side of the shank right behind the hook eye.
- Add the Silver Flash-a-Boo, Blue Angel Hair and Green Crystal Flash, using a sparse amount of each and stacking it one on top of the other in the order given. Optionally, you can cover this with a thinner Grizzly Hackle to give the fly a barred appearence.
- Throw in a few half-hitches to lock it down.
- Tie in about 12 Peacock Hurls for the topping.
- If you're going to use the dumb bell eyes, now is the time to put them on. Go ahead, I'll wait...
- Now tie in the White Chenille behind the eyes, or behind where the eyes will be, if you're using the Stick-Ons. Tie in the Red Chenille over that and make one wrap so that the White Chenille sticks out towrad the hook eye.
- Throw in a few half-hitches to lock it down.
- Wrap the White Chenille aound the head, figure eighting around the dumb bell eyes, if you're using them, buidling up a nice round head, if you're using Stick-Ons.
- Tie it off, Whip Finish and apply your favorite head cement.
- If you're using the Stick-On eyes, place them now.
